For thousands of years, all over the world, people from so many different cultures have used juniper smoke to open sacred ceremonies. Like: it might be on the level of human birthright.

And one of the ways this makes perfect sense is that juniper wood smells GREAT when it burns, and additionally, juniper wood is not a particularly sturdy building material. So it seems like the perfect thing to set apart for ritual use. Generations of human communities linked this smell with getting ready for a moment of connection with the divine.

We don’t always have a chance to get ready for connection with the divine, so when we do have that chance — to set apart a moment that’s not meant to be productive in any tangible sense, to invite the divine — it’s special.

I made this weighty pendant from the impression of a sprig of delicate and sturdy juniper growing by Lake Merritt in Oakland, California.
